Surgery for Crossed Eyes

by jmgreene67 in Health Issues (Down Syndrome)

I took Kiki in for her first eye exam, and the doctor suggested that she may need corrective surgery for her crossed eyes.  I've done a little internet research now, and what I've read so far is not encouraging: that the surgery most likely will not correct sight problems, that the surgery may not be permanent, that the surgery may cause scar tissue which may make it impossible to correct the crossed eyes with eyeglasses.

Has anybody out there had any personal experience with this surgery?  What was your experience?  Would you recommend it?

Thanks!

My daughter had the surgery about a year ago. She was 15 months old at the time. The recovery was quick and her crossing stopped completely. We didn't have any problems, at least none that we know of.

The eye doctor was the first and only doctor that told us everthing looked good for Lily in his department! But, I had cross-eyes. It started in high school, my sophmore year, they just started to cross. Anyway, I got surgery. They just tightened the muscles on one side, the left. Somehow that automatically corrected the right. I still had to wear glasses after that, but have never had a problem with my eyes crossing since then. The only problem I had was I was allergic to the disolvant in the stitches they had put in my eye so it was red for a few weeks after. I only spent a few days in the hospital, that was back in the 70's, I don't know if they did short stay back then. I would recommend it. These kiddos have so much to deal with, if we can help out with some of it I think we should. Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedback! Kiki had the surgery on Sept. 12 and she recovered beautifully. She's even been watching tv lately (though that could be a bad thing in some ways.)
