Fittings for Orthotics

by slbowli in Health Issues (Down Syndrome).

Today Aiden is going to get fitted for his first set of orthotics. His PT from or Early Intervention Program is bringing an orthotist from SureSteps. Hopefully, Aiden's feet are not too small and we can skip the casting.

My daughter, who has cerebral palsy, is 8 and has been getting orthotics (braces) since she was 1. I think casting is best b/c the orth is able to get a custom fit and this results in more comfort for the child. Casting was scary the first couple of times for her b/c of the saw they use to cut off the cast. The saw does not hurt, but it is loud. Headphones worn when the saw is on helps tremendously. If possible, have the orth. cut off the cast with a knife. The whole process should not hurt.

We went with the measurement fitting instead of a casting.
